How hard is Kilimanjaro? Fitness and training

[NEEDS JOSEPH: two or three sentences on how fit climbers need to be, and who struggles and why.] On my itineraries most days are 2 to 8 hours of walking. Summit day is the longest: 5 to 8 hours up to Uhuru Peak, then 5 to 8 hours down. The oldest climber I have guided was 87 years old. He took the 7-day Machame route and reached Uhuru Peak without supplementary oxygen.

How fit do I need to be?

[NEEDS JOSEPH: in your words, what level of fitness you see succeed, with concrete examples, e.g. “if you can walk 6 hours with a daypack on two days in a row…”.]

We stop often for water and snacks.

Who struggles, and why?

[NEEDS JOSEPH: the patterns you see: going too fast on the first days, not drinking enough, poor sleep, cold, nerves on summit night. This first-hand view is what readers and search engines trust.]

How hard is summit night?

On most of my itineraries summit night starts between midnight and 2 am, and it is the hardest part of the trek, mentally and physically. Read Summit night on Kilimanjaro for what to expect.

How should I train? An 8-week plan

[NEEDS JOSEPH: an 8-week plan, week by week: how many walks, how long, how much ascent, with a daypack or without, and what to do if you live somewhere flat. Cobus can turn it into a table.]

Am I too old to climb Kilimanjaro?

The oldest climber I have guided was 87 years old. He took the 7-day Machame route in February 2025, and reached Uhuru Peak without supplementary oxygen. The more days you take, the better your chance of reaching the summit.

[NEEDS JOSEPH: what matters more than age, in your experience.]

Which route is easiest on the body?

For first-time climbers I recommend the Machame route or the Lemosho route. Both give your body time to acclimatise. The Umbwe route is the fastest climb of the six, for hikers who are already acclimatised.
